UM - Temporary Cooling

The Temporary Cooling project involved engineering temporary cooling to four critical areas during this shutdown period: two densely packed server rooms (3 and 30 ton cooling loads), a research lab with a -86°C freezer containing valuable laboratory samples (1 ton cooling load), and a lab with specialized equipment which produces materials used in electronic nanotechnology (2 ton cooling load). A two week shutdown of CHW services to these buildings was necessary when the University converted many of its North Campus facilities to be served by a new centralized chilled water (CHW) plant.

Scope of Work

Design temporary cooling systems:

  • Coordinate design and installation with building occupants, facility managers, code inspectors and equipment vendors.
  • Manage temporary cooling equipment installation including:
    • - Provide temporary 120V, 220V and 480V electrical service.
    • - Construct lockable temporary doors to pass condenser air ductwork through (air-cooled units).
    • - Construct temporary drains for hot condenser water (water-cooled units).
  • Conduct system performance tests.
  • Coordinate continuous system performance monitoring during shutdown with air conditioning technicians.
  • Coordinate removal of temporary cooling systems and re-activation of building cooling systems.
